Creating a Crash Course Set

One of my favorite activities throughout the year is having students create their own Crash Course videos — with the addition of some fake mustaches — for the appropriately named 'Stache Course project. This year, we stepped it up a bit with an easy-to-make set that increased the quality of the videos. For each set, we used two 4'x8' foam insulation boards that are connected at the seam with duct tape. The boards are available at any of the big-box hardware stores. I painted the foam boards with three coats of white ceiling paint. Why ceiling paint? Because I had...

Digital lessons made easier with Blendspace

The webquest is a popular lesson format for teachers because it allows the students to explore a topic using resources that have been curated by the teacher. Students can have control over their learning as well if the teacher finds enough resources that some are optional. As more and more content is being added by reputable online sources, webquests have become even more effective. One challenge, however, has been in giving students an easy way to navigate to all of the resources. Nearpod: A valuable app for interactive presentations

For a long time, using technology in the classroom meant improving teacher-led instruction by making presentations look better. Rather than writing on the board, teachers could have PowerPoints with images. Prezi took it a step further with better transitions that would zoom in and out over a large canvas. The advent of interactive whiteboards improved this by allowing students to be more involved in the presentation. With clickers or student response devices, the entire class could interact with the presentation and provide valuable information for the teacher. Still, these tools could be a hassle for teachers as they had to...

EDpuzzle: An essential flipped classroom tool

A growing trend in education is to "flip the classroom" by assigning videos for students to watch at home to teach material that is typically covered in a lecture. This allows the teacher to make better use of the limited class time by implementing more hands-on learning. In order for the flipped classroom model to work, the teacher has to be able to share videos with the students to watch for homework. This can be done by simply sharing a link to a YouTube video, but then the teacher would have no ability to track whether or not students watched...
